Are You A Frumpy Or Fabulous Wife? – UPDATE with Linky Link

At the beginning of the week I decided to join Caroline at The Modest Mom in her challenge to become a fabulous wife. You can read her original post HERE and mine HERE.

**UPDATE** 10/12/2011
I’m joining Sarah Mae at Like A Warm Cup Of Coffee for her month long frump to pumps challenge! Will you join us?

At the beginning of the week I talked about trying to wear nicer clothes then jean skirt and t-shirts, and trying harder for nicer hairstyles. Also striving to take my medication everyday so the rosacea on my face would be cleared. Let’s see how I did. (Sorry about the pictures, I always seem to be making funky faces! LOL)

This is how I normally dress, long jean skirt and t-shirt. I don’t think my clothes are too frumpy, maybe I could have a cuter more stylish shirt. But my hair is atrocious to say the least!! I just hate to be bothered with it, which I know is setting a VERY bad example for the ladies in my church, as I am the co-pastor’s wife and I really should try harder.

Since I can’t go and buy a new wardrobe right now I decided to dress up this outfit with a scarf. And although Dustin thought it was adorable, it was also annoying and I took it off an hour later. Well at least I tried! Do you recognize my Delarosa Skirt?

I also tried a new hairstyle which is one of Dustin’s favorites …

I used to do a similar hair style to this but with french braids down each side and the braid ends twisted around. It was my husbands favorite. I wanted to do something similar but I my hair is too long for me to braid by myself anymore, so I decided to try twisting it with a bun in the back. It took less then 15 minutes and I think it came out pretty good. I asked Dustin how he liked it and he said it was “very pretty.” (I learned long ago not to “bait” my husband. He doesn’t know if I am looking for a compliment or a specific response from him. I simply ask him what he thinks about something to let him know I am looking for his opinion. Our marriage is much happier now with this kind of openness.)

Dustin loves when I wear my hair down with a little “puff” in the front. I try to wear it like this when we are together and usually end up twisting the back in a bun with my bangs still up. (It’s still better then slicked straight back!)

As you can see my face is red and blotchy from rosacea, but I have been more conscious and eating healthier so hopefully that will go away soon.
I always ask my husband’s opinion about my clothing. I know he is going to give me an honest answer, even if I don’t like it. I may have a favorite outfit that he doesn’t care for. I try not to wear that outfit on days that I will be spending with him. If he tells me an outfit is not flattering, even if I love it, I take his opinion at the highest regard and will probably get rid of it. After all, even if it makes me feel beautiful, it is not fair to make him be with an unflattering wife when he can be with a fabulous wife. And if he feels my clothes too revealing, even if I don’t, then I could be responsible for opening up a place in his mind for the devil to fight him, and that is not being a help meet to him at all. Really clothes are just clothes and are one of the easiest parts of our relationship to change. I can always find something we are both happy with. And it makes me feel so good to know that he thinks I am “pretty” or “beautiful”. Why wouldn’t I strive for that?
For me one of the hardest struggles this week has not been my outer appearance, but my inner. It is not always easy for me to have a meek and quiet spirit:
1 Peter 3:1-5 “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may be without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chase (holy) conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God a great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:”
I don’t believe this scripture is saying that we shouldn’t care about our outer appearance, but rather that our inward appearance is what is really going to make a difference. And I know I am far from a meek and quiet spirit, although I am doing much better now that I am making a conscious effort to change.
This week has been particularly difficult because I have had many personal struggles. I have been in a lot of pain due to the 21 surgeries I have had for Ulcerative Colitis etc… (You can read my testimony here) I don’t want to get too personal, but there are several parts of my body that do not work properly, if at all, and this leaves me feeling angry, frustrated, hurt and like a failure to my husband who deserves a fully functioning wife. I have to really pray and keep a good spirit when I have these bad days where parts of my body are simply not working. I know Dustin is also frustrated, not necessarily with me, but with the circumstances. In these times we pray and believe together that God is healing me and I won’t have to live like this forever. I know it makes a HUGE difference in our marriage when I can say “it’s OK, God promised to heal me and that’s what we are going to focus on!” I thank God that he can help me pray away the bitterness and hurt and give me that meek and quiet spirit that he desires me to have. A good spirit goes a long way to making me a fabulous wife!
My sister in law was taking my picture yesterday and I thought it was so cute when Dustin jumped in!
Do you struggle with being frumpy or having a meek and quiet spirit? What do you find helps you change?

I was thinking about linking up and improving my appearance for my husband and myself has been on my mind, so will see….

But with your post, thanks for sharing. I like the picture with the scarf, but mainly because it looks like your hair has a part to the side, that was a nice touch do you try a side part with your hair down sometimes?

Also, I am going to link up a scarf tutorial that I happened upon yesterday, which I think will be easier for you to wear throughout the day than the bow you showed and wont' be too close to your neck…check it out, it looks easy and you could make several for dressing up your shirts differently or even make the fabric less wide to reduce some of the bulk of the design.

Honestly, I have never given any thought to whether or not I am *frumpy* or *fabulous* until you raised the question this week. Since I have to wear my hair up for work, I try to wear it down whenever I am not working but that has nothing to do with my husband! LOL

Also, since we don't see each other several days out of the week due to our work schedules, I think that I gravitate to *comfortable*. So, now I'm going to ask him what he thinks and what his preferences are. Thanks for getting me to think about something new this week :)

My husband rarely comment on my clothes, like some men I don't think he notices, unless it is something he strongly dislikes. I don't tend to ask him as he doesnt like to be bothered with clothing. However he does comment on my hair which is curly preferring it to remain curly and not straight.

  10. Gail @ The Imperfect Housewife says:

Visiting from the link up at Sarah Mae's :) I too have been trying to 'get myself together' lately. I just had our 5th baby 3 months ago, and my wonderful husband let me go shopping a few weeks back for a few new outfits. I got some cute dresses with leggings, and so, I'm trying to wear skirts (with or without the leggings) every day :)
Oh! And I also have rosacea. I have it pretty mild (it runs in my family so…. I'm working on keeping it under control!) but I broke out a bit with this last pregnancy. My sister recommended using Proactive, or Acne-Free(the off brand you can find at Walmart or Target or somewhere.) My face cleared up within the week! Just thought I would pass that along as that's what helped me :)

  11. Treasures of Faith says:

Thanks for stopping in Gail! I will check out the Acne-Free! I still can't seem to get this under control! :( Thanks so much for the tip! I'm off to visit you now!

I recently just stumbled upon your blog & sight from a friend on fb…, I can honestly say, I love it!! From great, inspirational & encouraging subjects like this, to your sewing tuts! I’m SO excited you shared how to make your own appliqués!!! I make my jean skirts sort of the same way you do…. It’s do great to see there are ppl whom are not selfish with their expertise & knowledge of HOW TO make skirts, flowers, appliqués & more! Afterall, we are sisters in Christ, helping ea other to be more aware of how to dress modestly…. & not so worried about making a quick buck!

God bless you Sara…. Thank you!
